From the 1st October 2019, the NDIS has implemented major reforms, now providing eligible participants funding for disability-related health supports.

The NDIS & Health interface has previously resulted in constant inconsistencies – particularly when it comes to Allied Health and supports for health conditions associated with a participant’s disability. These reforms hope to address these major health gaps for people living with a disability, enabling more people to maintain their health and continue to live in the community.

What health-supports will now be funded and how does this affect Active Ability’s support of your participants?

This has radically changed how you will now be able to access the support services of our dietitians, particularly if the participant is unable to self-manage their own health condition (such as dysphagia or diabetes) due to their disability. Where a participant’s health condition is a result of their disability, a part of their daily life or impacted by their functional impairment, it has now been deemed most appropriately funded by the NDIS and additional funding will be available to them for this reason.

Types of dietetic support that Active Ability can now provide includes those related to:

Swallowing (Dysphagia),
Diabetes and
Nutrition.
This is not however an exhaustive list and funding will continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.  While some participants will require urgent attention due to the complex nature of their needs, others can expect for these disability-related health-supports to be included in their plan at their next plan review if eligible. Until then, disability-related health supports can be funded from the participant’s core supports funding.

These are exciting and well awaited changes as they ensure that participants are getting the essential support they need to assist with their disability-related health needs.

Stay tuned!
